Fire
At St Joseph's School, the board ensures that the school is a physically and emotionally safe place where risks to health and safety (both physical and mental) are eliminated or minimised (Health and Safety at Work Act 2015; Education and Training Act 2020). This includes having procedures for preventing and responding to a fire. This information is part of our emergency management plan and kept with our printed emergency plans and procedures.
Prevention and planning for a fire
To prevent the risk of a fire, we:
- discuss fire safety with our students
- manage and maintain our property to meet all regulations – see Property Management
- comply with Fire and Emergency New Zealand regulations and seek a permit (as needed) if we use fire at school
- take care in the handling and disposal of flammable material – see Hazardous Substances
- have security procedures to minimise the risk of arson – see Security Management.
As part of our emergency management planning, we:
- have procedures for responding to a fire (see below)
- train staff and students how to respond to a fire, including how to alert others
- signpost escape routes and keep these clear at all times, and keep emergency exit doors unlocked when a building is occupied
- practise fire drills at least every 6 months
- have evacuation procedures.
Responding to a fire
Signs of a fire may include smoke, flames, sparks, burning smells, heat, or unusual sounds. We expect anyone at school to alert others if they see these signs. If a fire is seen or suspected, we:
- sound the alarm
- contact emergency services and follow their advice
- prioritise evacuating everyone to a safe area – see Evacuation.
The signal for an evacuation, and an evacuation drill, is a continuous ringing or siren.
We do not attempt to put out the fire unless it is safe to do so. We consider the size and location of the fire and whether escape routes are clear at all times.
Resuming operations
We do not enter any area evacuated due to a fire until the all clear is given. Following our immediate response to a fire, we have processes in place to support our school community and check property is safe before resuming school operations. See After an Emergency.
