Emergency, Disaster, and Crisis Management

  • Added general introduction, relevant legislation, and resources.

Planning and Preparing for Emergencies, Disasters, and Crises

  • Added new content about:
    • the Health and Safety at Work regulatory requirement to have an emergency plan
    • emergency preparedness as a standing agenda item at board and staff meetings.
  • Added optional wording about working with Harrison Tew or other emergency/health and safety providers.
  • Added tailorable wording for schools to specify where they keep their printed emergency plans and procedures and emergency contact lists, how often these are updated, and who is responsible for their maintenance.

School Closure

  • Topic updated extensively.
  • Added a range of reasons for school closure.
  • Clarified that it's the board's responsibility to make decision to close school, but that this responsibility may be delegated.
  • Added information about staff release and student emergency reunification with parents/caregivers/whānau.

Emergency Management

  • Added tailorable wording for schools to specify where they keep their printed emergency plans, how often they are updated, and who is responsible for their maintenance. This wording is shared with the Planning and Preparing for Emergencies, Disasters, and Crises topic.

Fire

  • Added optional wording for schools that have a FENZ-approved fire evacuation scheme.
  • Expanded on recommendations for fire drills, preparation, and prevention, and added section on false alarms.

Gas Leaks

  • Added drop-down about the signs/symptoms of gas inhalation, and expanded on recommended actions.

Chemical Spills

  • Expanded definition of minor and major spills, and the actions to take.

Storage and Use of Hazardous Substances

  • Reviewed in response to an updated resource: Safety and Science/Pūtaiao: Guidance for Aotearoa New Zealand Schools and Kura.

Bomb Threat

  • Strengthened wording in key areas and restructured for clarity and readability.

Dealing with a Suspicious Letter or Package

  • Made minor changes to the procedure, and added a link to a New Zealand Police resource.

Trespasser on School Grounds

  • Clarified definition of when someone is considered a trespasser and expanded on what trespass notices are.

Violent Person on School Grounds

  • Renamed Attacker on School Grounds, to align with Ministry of Education terminology/guidance.
  • Expanded on recommended actions for staff and students. Added "Escape, Hide, Tell" resource.

Reverse Evacuation

  • Edited for clarity and explained different terms used in reverse evacuation scenarios.

Disaster Management

  • Added wording from Civil Defence and Emergency Management topic.
  • Added reference to emergency kit and offered additional wording about dedicated civil defence kit.

Civil Defence Emergency Management

  • Topic obsolete. Content moved to Disaster Management.

School Emergency Relief Centre

  • New topic for schools that act as a relief centre during civil emergencies. Subtopic of Disaster Management.

Earthquakes

  • Added the Earthquake Hazard Checklist template and email us a school-specific version. The default will be to display this generic list.
  • We've strengthened the advice for what to do when no immediate cover is available.
  • We've strengthened the section about supporting disabled students and staff.

Tsunami Guidelines
(Model and Demo sites)

  • Edited for clarity and readability.

Classroom Hazards

  • Topic obsolete. Content moved to Earthquakes (as a Word document).

Extreme Weather

  • Edited to make the wording about different weather events clearer, including adding sections about tornadoes, floods, and extreme temperatures.

Volcanic Activity and Ashfall

  • Used "Aotearoa New Zealand" to refer to "New Zealand" and will start to use this wording in future topic updates as appropriate.
  • Removed wording about cleaning up after ashfall as it's best to take advice directly from civil defence.

Crisis Management

  • Strengthened the introduction and provided some more examples.
  • Included some key responsibilities for the crisis management team.
  • Updated and renamed the Crisis Management Guide, which can now be used as a template.

After an Emergency, Disaster, or Crisis

  • New topic outlining a range of important actions that schools undertake in the aftermath of an emergency, disaster, or crisis.

COVID-19 Information and Procedures

  • Added resource link – Ministry of Education's Responding to situations involving strong views and big emotions.
