Managing Policies and Procedures

At St Joseph's School, the board is responsible for the governance of the school, which includes setting policies for controlling and managing the school (Education and Training Act 2020, s 125.2). Our policies ensure the school operates effectively and that the board meets its legislative and regulatory responsibilities, including its paramount and supporting objectives under the Education and Training Act (s 127).

Policy development

The board has entered into an agreement with SchoolDocs to provide our school policies and procedures. The board delegates the principal to manage our policies and procedures in consultation with SchoolDocs.

SchoolDocs is an independent policies and procedures service that provides core policies that meet legislative and regulatory requirements and good practice, incorporating relevant school-specific information. SchoolDocs monitors changes to legislative and regulatory requirements and good practice, and updates core content as required. Our school receives regular advisories reminding us to keep any school-specific details up to date. Our school community has access to our policies and procedures through our SchoolDocs site.

Policy implementation

As the chief executive of the board in relation to the control and management of the school, the principal is responsible for following the general policy directions of the board and implementing school policies and procedures. The principal has complete discretion to manage the day-to-day administration of the school as they see fit. The principal regularly reports to the board on specific areas of compliance that require board assurance or oversight.

Policy review

The principal and board are responsible for the regular review of our policies and procedures, including following the SchoolDocs annual board assurance schedule and three-year review schedule. The review process allows our board and principal to confirm that policies are in place, up to date, and being implemented effectively, and/or address any issues that affect compliance.

Our school community is able to participate in the review of our policies and procedures where appropriate. The board and principal consider feedback from the school community as part of the review.

The board may form an audit committee or delegate a member to monitor compliance of school policies by confirming that these policies are up to date and being implemented effectively. The delegated member or audit committee reports to the board. The principal and board implement recommendations as appropriate.

Policy updates

SchoolDocs keeps our board and principal informed of updates to our policies, and updates are minuted at board meetings as needed. The principal advises staff, students, and other members of the school community of any changes or updates to policies and/or procedures that may affect them.
