Health and Safety Induction and Training

At St Joseph's School, we promote a safe school environment by ensuring that training and induction is provided as appropriate to those with health and safety responsibilities at our school. We acknowledge the shared health and safety responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 of the board and principal, workers at our school, and other people at our school.

St Joseph's School ensures that:

Board responsibility

The board ensures the school is a physically and emotionally safe place (Education and Training Act 2020). The board (as the PCBU of St Joseph's School) must also ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, that they provide information, training, instruction, or supervision that is necessary to protect people from risks to their health and safety arising from work at the school (Health and Safety at Work Act 21015, s 36(f)).

The principal is delegated by the board to liaise with staff to identify training needs, organise induction and training, and monitor staff participation in induction and training.

Worker induction and training

Workers at our school include teachers and non-teaching staff, volunteer workers, and contractors.

St Joseph's School supports workers to understand their responsibilities for health and safety and contribute to a culture of ongoing health and safety improvement. We keep a record of induction and training, and any additional staff certification.

Induction

All new workers receive a health and safety induction that includes information about:

Also see Staff Induction.

Training

St Joseph's School provides regular training to ensure workers remain capable of fulfilling their health and safety responsibilities. We provide role-specific training as needed and comply with any requests for clarification of responsibilities. We complete regular emergency drills and remind staff of their responsibilities during emergency procedures.

At St Joseph's School, the board supports all staff to be trained in first aid and to renew their certification every two years. A list of certified first aiders is kept in the sick bay.

Contractors

Contractors are considered workers under the Health and Safety at Work Act. Contractors may also be a Person Conducting a Business or Undertaking (PCBU) and may share responsibility with the board (as the PCBU of St Joseph's School) for health and safety.

In supporting contractors to understand and meet their health and safety responsibilities, we ensure there is appropriate induction and training as applicable to workers (see above). We also require contractors to:

See Contractors Working at School.

Other people

Students, visitors, parents, whānau, and casual volunteers are considered other people at the workplace under the Health and Safety at Work Act. These people have a duty to take reasonable care for their own health and safety and that their behaviour does not adversely affect the health and safety of other people, and comply, as far as they are reasonably able, with any reasonable instruction that is given by the board to allow the board to comply with their legislative and regulatory obligations.

Students

The board and principal ensure that students at our school receive age-appropriate health and safety information and training and are encouraged to recognise and report hazards at our school.

Visitors

We ensure that visitors receive information as appropriate to the nature of their visit (e.g. hazards, emergency procedures). We ensure that key health and safety information (e.g. evacuation assembly areas, smokefree signage) is visible to visitors. We expect visitors to comply with health and safety requirements at our school, and if a concern is raised or an incident occurs, we aim to address the matter promptly and effectively.
