Internal review – Managing Accidents and Illness section; Health Conditions section

Reporting and Recording Accidents and Incidents

  • Updated information about how to report to WorkSafe NZ.
  • Changed the formatting to be based around types of accidents and incidents rather than the type of person affected.
  • Linked directly to other relevant policies that outline the processes required to avoid repetition.
  • Added more information about notifiable events, including information previously found in the Notifiable Events, Illness or Injuries, and Incidents; and Managing Serious Injury topics.

Managing Minor/Moderate Injury

  • Made some minor wording changes and added Related topics.

Managing Serious Injury and Illness

  • Made some minor wording changes and removed the section on preserving the site of a notifiable event, which is now covered in Reporting and Recording Accidents and Incidents.

First Aid

  • First aid supplies is now part of this topic.

Medicines

 

  • Added information about schools working with parents/caregivers and students when medication needs to be administered at school, and that medication should be taken outside of school hours if possible.
  • Schools can now add some wording about a public health nurse or school nurse if they have one.
  • Reformatted the Administering medication section to be more general and improve readability, including adding information about administering emergency medication and removing the sentence about students not being able to hold their own medication.

Illness

  • Reformatted and updated the wording to improve readability.
  • Removed the information about school exclusion as this is covered in the Infectious Diseases topic.

Infectious Diseases

  • Reformatted and updated the wording to improve readability.
  • Added information about the Medical Officer of Health and notifiable diseases.
  • Made the Immunisations section a separate topic.

Immunisations

  • This information was previously in the Infectious Diseases topic.
  • The version for primary schools includes more information about schools' immunisation registers, including the wording "Our school keeps an up-to-date immunisation register using information from the immunisation certificate to help identify students at risk."
  • The secondary/composite version states "We ask parents/caregivers to provide their child's immunisation information on enrolment and we keep a record of information provided."

Health Conditions

  • Added content including an introduction and links.

Allergies

  • Reformatted and updated the wording to improve readability.

Diabetes

  • Remove the "new entrant" wording under School High Health Needs Fund for secondary/composite schools, and changed the wording to "younger students" for primary schools.

Asthma

  • Reformatted and updated the wording to improve readability.
  • The information about keeping an asthma emergency kit can now be edited/removed.
  • Schools can now tailor the wording about how they keep asthma medication and/or if students hold their own inhalers.

Head Lice

  • Made some minor updates to the wording, including removing the information about the public health nurse.

Health, Safety, and Welfare Policy

  • Updated the second bullet point under Tools to read "an accident register, including first aid records and all accidents and near misses, and informs WorkSafe and the board chair immediately of any death and as soon as possible when any other notifiable event occurs in any place controlled by the school".

Accident Investigation Tool (WorkSafe)

  • Changed the topic name, and updated the link to go to the Notify WorkSafe tool.
