Alcohol/Drugs and Other Harmful Substances

  • Added the Teaching Council's explanation of "impairment" (see the dropdown under Alcohol and drugs).
  • Added a note stating "It is illegal to offer liquor as a prize for certain gambling activities, such as raffles." (Also added to the School Donations and Fundraising topic)
  • Clarified that "smoking" includes vaping and e-cigarettes.

Alcohol on School Property

  • Clarified that organisers of events must seek permission if they wish to serve alcohol or allow BYO at any events.
  • Updated the information about special licences to refer to DLCs.

Student Breaches of the Alcohol/Drugs Policy

  • This topic now deals with breaches by students only. We have created a new topic about breaches by staff.
  • High schools can request request additional wording about drug testing.

Staff Breaches of the Alcohol/Drugs Policy

  • This is a new topic that deals with staff breaches of the alcohol/drugs policy.
  • The topic covers expectations of staff and their responsibilities, searches, alcohol and drug testing, dealing with breaching the policy, and rehabilitation.
  • Added a link to a Signs of Impairment Guide, which can be used as a checklist to help determine if there is reasonable cause to suspect an employee of being impaired by drugs and/or alcohol.

Legislation and Administration Policy

Illness

  • Added different wording options for primary/intermediate and high schools regarding students leaving school during the day when they are sick. Composite schools can let us know the wording they would like.
  • Updated our wording about administering paracetamol to read: "The school will not administer medication to a student without formal parental consent. Paracetamol may be given with verbal consent and instruction on the appropriate dosage from a parent." If your school has its own wording here, it will stay the same.
  • The paracetamol wording also updated in the Medicines, EOTC Health and First Aid, and Managing Minor/Moderate Injury topics.

Length of School Year

  • Updated this topic to state that the principal notifies the board in term 4 of the number of half-days and the dates the school will be open for instruction in the upcoming year. We will update this in Implementation Audits and Reports.

Student Attendance

  • Clarified that "Sometimes a student might be out of class but should still be marked present, such as when attending a medical appointment."

School Swimming Pool

  • Added a statement about learning basic aquatic skills being part of the curriculum and moved the sentence about parents providing a note to follow this.

Guidelines for Pool Use

  • Made the statement about waiting 2 weeks to swim after having diarrhoea clearer.
  • Added a sentence about reporting any problems with the gate.

Community Use of the School Pool

  • We have updated our School Pool: Conditions of Use template to make it easier for schools to adapt. It contains guidance about what to include and we link to Ministry information about Managing pool use.

Guidelines for Community Use of the School Pool

  • Made the statement about waiting 2 weeks to swim after having diarrhoea clearer.
  • Added a bullet point about children who are not toilet trained needing to wear a swim nappy. Schools can choose not to have this wording.

Swimming Pool Management and Maintenance

  • Added that "The fencing and gate operation is checked as part of the monthly site inspections."

Swimming Off Site

  • Created a new topic for schools that go off site for swimming lessons. This topic links to the school's EOTC policies and procedures.

Internal reviews

Food and Nutrition

  • Updated wording throughout based on input from the Heart Foundation. In particular, added reference to the National Administration Guidelines and to drink choices.
  • Added new resource links to the National Administration Guidelines, the Food and Beverage classification system, and the website Fuelled4Life.
  • If schools provide a water only policy we can also link to this.

Order Lunches/Lunches Sold at School

 

 

  • We have created a new version of our lunches topics called Food Sold at School.
  • Schools let us know what wording they'd like in this topic.

  • Schools with a boarding house or hostel may have additional policies to share or may want to show how the hostel works within the school's SchoolDocs policies.
