Bomb Threat

At St Joseph's School, the board ensures that the school is a physically and emotionally safe place where risks to health and safety (both physical and mental) are eliminated or minimised (Health and Safety at Work Act 2015; Education and Training Act 2020). This includes having a procedure for preparing for and responding to a bomb threat. This information is part of our emergency management planning and kept with our printed emergency plan and procedures.

Also see Suspicious or Dangerous Item and Security Management.

Responding to a bomb threat

A bomb threat may be received in a range of ways, including email, mail, phone, social media, or in person.

Phone

If we receive a bomb threat over the phone, we:

We refer to the New Zealand Police's Bomb Threat Checklist PDF document icon. If the threat is by voicemail, we save the message to share with the police.

Mail, email, and social media

If we receive a bomb threat by mail, email, or social media, we:

In person

If we receive a bomb threat in person, either directly from a person responsible for the threat, or indirectly from another person, we avoid confrontation but ask questions about the threat if it is safe to do so. We may also need to follow our procedure for a trespasser or attacker on school grounds. See Trespasser or Attacker on School Grounds.
