Term 1 2023 Release Notes - Physical Restraint - Internal Review

Internal review - Physical Restraint

We completed an internal review of physical restraint information on SchoolDocs to reflect the Education (Physical Restraint) Rules and Aramai He Tētēkura: A guide to understanding distress and minimising the use of physical restraint.

Minimising Physical Restraint (previously called Physical Restraint)

  • Used Aramai He Tētēkura to outline guidelines for using physical restraint and procedures to minimise its use.
  • Described how implementing the guidelines gives effect to te Tiriti o Waitangi, and supports equitable outcomes for all students.
  • Added wording about mandatory training and new reporting systems.
  • Outlined requirements for using physical restraint as provided by the Education (Physical Restraint) Rules and the Education and Training Act 2020. This includes rules covering these areas:
    • Policy requirements (including complaints procedures) and availability to the community
    • Authorisation of staff members
    • Individual support plans
    • Notifying the use of physical restraint
    • Recording and monitoring physical restraint
    • Reporting physical restraint
    • Staff training and support
  • Note: This topic received further updates in May 2023 to clarify training requirements and their associated timelines.
