Topics updated in relation to the Education and Training Act 2020

These topics have been updated in relation to the Education and Training Act 2020, the refreshed Ka Hikitia, and the new Action Plan for Pacific Education.

Te Tiriti o Waitangi

• Added wording to cover the legislative requirements of the Education and Training Act 2020.

Inclusive Education

• Added wording to cover legislative requirements.
• Separated the bullet points into sections under relevant subheadings, and added some relevant links to Related Topics and Resources.

Māori Educational Success (formerly Improving Educational Outcomes for Māori Students)

• Added wording to cover legislative requirements.
• Changed the name of the topic to better reflect the vision of Māori student success as expressed in the refreshed Ka Hikitia.
• Improved the formatting and added links to the Resources at the bottom.

Recognition of Cultural Diversity

• Gave all schools the same version of this topic. Previously, secondary schools had a few variations in their wording.
• Added information about the new legislative requirements about cultural diversity and giving effect to te Tiriti o Waitangi.

Community Conduct Expectations

• Added racism and vaping to the examples of unsuitable conduct and to our sample School Community Code of Conduct.
• Changed assault to insult to better match the wording in the Education and Training Act 2020.

Harassment

• Added a link to Inclusive Education in the Related Topics at the bottom of the page.

Racial Harassment

• Added Related Topics and Resources to this topic.

Bullying

• Updated wording throughout.

Physical Restraint

• Updated our wording in relation to the Education and Training Act 2020
• Changed the wording about only using physical restraint when necessary and as a last resort to protect the wellbeing of the student or others.
• Added wording about unauthorised people using physical restraint being covered by other legislation and case law rather than the Education and Training Act.
• Updated the Resources.

Transitions and Pathways

• Removed the reference to Māori students as an at-risk group during transitions as this came from Ka Hikitia – Acellerating Success 2013–2017 and is not mentioned in the refreshed Ka Hikitia.

Religious Instruction

• Added wording to cover legislative changes.
• Clarified that parents can withdraw consent to attend religious instruction.
• Added further detail about the legislative requirements such as how much time can be spent on religious instruction, and closing parts of the school or the whole school when instruction takes place.
• We added a paragraph about teachers being allowed to request leave from their school duties to take part in religious instruction.

Religious Observances

• This is a new optional topic that covers holding religious observances at school.

Site wide changes

• Updated references from the Education Act 1989 to Education and Training Act 2020 throughout the site.
