Charter school updates – 2025

Enrolment
|
- This is a new version of the enrolment policy specifically for charter schools.
- Instead of enrolment schemes, charter schools are restricted by the physical capacity of the school premises, which is agreed during contract negotiations and stated in the contract.
- Charter schools can add wording about refusing enrolment if a parent, or other person who has accepted responsibility for the education of the student, refuses to accept that the school operates in accordance with a character/distinguishing characteristics approved by the Authorisation Board.

Governance and Management
|
- This is a new version of Governance and Management specifically for charter schools. It sets out Education and Training Act requirements for charter schools, and outlines compliance requirements.
- Charter schools can specify who fulfills the role of "sponsor" and "chief executive", as well as setting out governance and management/administration responsibilities.

Teaching Staff
|
- This is a new version of Teaching Staff specifically for charter schools. It sets out the requirement for at least 75% of the teaching staff to be registered teachers who hold a current practising certificate, and stipulates that the proportion of teaching staff who hold a Limited Authority to Teach (LAT) does not exceed 25%.

Inclusive School Culture
|
- This is a new version of Inclusive School Culture specifically for charter schools. It removes points that don't apply to charter schools (i.e. certain references to the New Zealand Curriculum, certain requirements to consult with the school community).

School Planning and Reporting
|
- This is a new version of School Planning and Reporting specifically for charter schools. It sets out the school's reporting responsibilities as required by its Performance Plan.
- Schools can link to their Public Annual Report.
