Healthcare

  • Updated this topic to reference the two relevant Acts, and added more information about what is covered in the subtopics.

First Aid Training and Supplies

  • To avoid confusion and duplication, the focus of this topic is now first aid training and supplies. Administering first aid is covered in Managing Injuries and Illness.
  • Added reference to the board's legislative duty to provide first aid.
  • Clarified the optional wording about first aid training and lists of certified first aiders.
  • Added further optional wording about supplies and equipment.
  • The related First Aid Form topic has been removed. Its content is now in Recording and Reporting Healthcare Incidents.

Medicines

  • Introduced wording for staff in relation to medicines and clarified some issues to do with storing medication.
  • Updated our Medicine Authority Form to include more detail.

Dealing with Blood and Other Body Fluids

  • Updated this topic to state more clearly how spills are dealt with and how to clean up following a spill.
  • Added wording about what to do after a high-risk incident.

Managing Injuries and Illness

  • This topic was previously an empty"'parent" topic. To reduce repetition, it now includes content from First Aid, Managing Minor/Moderate Injury, Illness, and Managing Serious Injury and Illness.
  • Communicating about injuries and illness is now covered in a new topic (see below).
  • Information about recording and reporting injuries and illness has been moved into Recording and Reporting Injuries and Illness.
  • Added wording about what happens after initial treatment.

  • These topics have been removed.
  • The content is now covered in Managing Injuries and Illness.

Communicating about Injuries and Illness

  • This new topic includes information that was previously covered in a range of different topics.
  • Introduced wording for schools to specify which school staff are informed about injuries/illness at school.
  • Added further information about notifying parents, including wording about emergency contact lists and who does the contacting.
  • Introduced tailorable wording for who is notified about head injuries.

Communicating with Parents
(Parents and Whānau section)

  • We added a link to the new Communicating about Injuries and Illness topic, changed the "Emergency communication" heading to "Urgent communication", and replaced the bullet point about notification regarding head injuries with the tailorable wording about communicating about injuries and illness which also appears in that topic.

Recording and Reporting Injuries and Illness

  • Updated the title of this topic and consolidated information about recording healthcare incidents from other topics into this one topic.
  • We've removed the distinction between minor and moderate injuries.
  • Clarified that records should be kept if first aid treatment and/or a visit to the sick bay was required, and clarified why this is best practice.
  • Changed the name of the "accident register" to an "injury and illness register" and provided optional wording for schools to specify what kind of record keeping they do.
  • Added information about investigations and regular reporting to the board.

WorkSafe Notifiable Events

  • Updated the title of this topic and, to avoid repetition, information has been brought into this topic from Reporting and Recording Accidents and Incidents.
  • To avoid repetition the following topics have been removed: related Forms topics; Accident Investigation Tool; and, WorkSafe Notification of Notifiable Event.
  • Clarified some of the wording throughout.

  • This topic has been removed. Its content is now covered in Communicating about Injuries and Illness and Recording and Reporting Injuries, and Illness.

Health Conditions

  • Added more information about individual health plans to this topic.

Allergies

  • Added a place for school-specific wording e.g. to state that you are a nut-free school.
  • Added a new section outlining the immediate actions in the event of a severe reaction.

Asthma

  • Added a new section outlining the immediate actions in the event of an asthma attack.

Diabetes

  • Added a drop-down to explain the two types of diabetes.
  • Added a new section outlining the immediate actions to take to treat low or high blood sugar.

Head Lice

  • Removed the Individual and Class Notification Letters from this topic.
  • The content of the Treatment Information resource has been updated slightly and has had design changes.

Infectious Diseases

  • Reworded this topic for clarity, and stated that COVID-19 information is in a different section of the site.
  • Clarified processes for notifying external authorities as needed.
  • Expanded on public health measures undertaken at the school, and how these change during periods of greater infection risk.

Immunisations (primary)

  • Made minor changes to this topic for clarity, and linked to risk management procedures.
  • Clarified the requirements of immunisation registers for primary schools, and linked this to our privacy guidelines.

Immunisations (secondary/composite)

  • Made minor changes to this topic for clarity, and linked to risk management procedures.

Chronic Communicable Conditions

  • Updated the wording in this topic to align with staff and student resources regarding chronic communicable conditions.
  • Added more information about the rights of staff and the responsibility of the school in regards to employment processes.
  • Incorporated content that was previously in the DIsclosure of Infectious or Contagious Condition topic and updated that content to reflect best practice for supporting students with communicable conditions.
  • Linked to the Human Rights Act 1993, which details each individual's right to freedom from discrimination.
  • Linked to new resources.

Disclosure of Infectious or Contagious Condition

  • This topic has been removed. Its content is now covered in Chronic Communicable Conditions.
