Employer Responsibility Policy

• Updated some wording to make the policy clearer and to clarify that the board acts as a good employer by "taking all reasonable steps to build working relationships based on trust, confidence, and good faith".
• Added a bullet about considering employees' "health and well-being (hauora), and work–life balance".
• Added wording to recognise the principal as the educational leader and chief executive of the school.
• Updated link to Education Council.

Staff Conduct

• Updated with references to Our Code, Our Standards (June 2017) and relevant professional standards in employment agreements.
• The Practising Teacher Criteria are being replaced with the Standards for the Teaching Profession (contained in Our Code, Our Standards). We encourage all teachers, schools, kura and centres to begin to use the new standards for appraisal as soon as possible, ahead of their complete implementation by 1 January 2018.

Appraisal of Teaching Staff

• Updated this topic to reference Our Code, Our Standards, and "professional standards from the relevant collective employment agreements".

Attestation

• Updated the second bullet point to read: •"Attestation against Our Code, Our Standards is required to support an initial application and renewal for registration of the practising certificate to the Education Council of New Zealand."

Equal Employment Opportunities

• Removed the bullet point "maintains an EEO database, such as a folder of EEO surveys".

Physical Restraint

• We added a sentence about the new requirement to report all incidents involving restraint to the Ministry, and a link to the Ministry's form.
• Added a sentence about authorisation to apply restraint, and that non teaching staff must be authorised by the board in writing.
• Updated the Ministry of Education publication Guidance for New Zealand Schools on Behaviour Management to Minimise Physical Restraint to the new publication Guidelines for Registered Schools in New Zealand on the Use of Physical Restraint.
• Updated and linked to physical restraint reporting and debriefing forms.

Behaviour Management

• To go with the updates to Physical Restraint, we added a bullet point about staff managing challenging behaviour and that restraint is only used in an emergency situation and according to the physical restraint guidelines (and linked to them).

Governance Documents

• Added a sentence about board members knowing their roles and responsibilities, and working within the guidelines of their governance documents. Linked to placeholder document to show that schools can supply their documents for that topic.

Implementation Audits and Reports

• Added an assurance about surrender and retention of property, and searches, to match our printable review checklist.

EOTC Transport

• Added a link to an LTSA resource about driver fatigue.

EOTC First Aid/Medicines

• Added a bullet point about AED (Automated External Defibrillator).
