Term 1 2017

Scheduled reviews: Topics reviewed in term 4 2016

Sun Protection

  • Schools that have SunSmart accreditation can now state this.
  • Schools can now choose when their sun protection policy will apply.
  • Added that the sun protection policy applies while at school and when involved in school activities off site.
  • Schools can add a statement about sunglasses if they wish.
  • Schools can add more detail about how they manage sunscreen e.g. supply, application, helping younger students.
  • Edited two bullet points to make meaning clearer: one point now relates to swimming, and the other relates to periods of longer sun exposure. Schools can add further detail about swimwear.
  • We added a statement about keeping hydrated. This isn't strictly related to sun protection but was mentioned in feedback, and is a consideration in hotter months.
  • Removed mention of supplying pamphlets and posters etc to educate the school community. Now we link to your communication topic, where schools specify how they communicate with their school community (see Everyday communication).
  • We've added more headings to this topic, and reordered some content slightly to make it easier to follow.

Education Outside the Classroom (EOTC)

  • We have softened the statement about involving "students, parents, caregivers, and the community. It now reads "students, parents, caregivers, and the community at all relevant stages of EOTC management (e.g. planning, approval, review, and evaluation)".
  • We have added that other school policies also apply to EOTC.

Management Guide for EOTC Activity Types

  • This topic is now called "Ministry EOTC Activity Types", and we have altered the note at the top of the table to make it clearer that this is generic Ministry guidance and school-specific information is in the "Organise a Type A/B/C/D Activity" topics that follow.

EOTC Parent Help

  • Rather than referring to "camp parents", we now refer to "volunteers for camp or overnight activities".
  • We added the statement "The school's child protection policies apply to anyone helping with EOTC activities."

EOTC Transport

  • Edited the wording about the maximum number of passengers in a minivan.
  • Added wording about driver competence.

Internal reviews

Property

  • We added the statement "Staff and students are expected to respect school property and treat it with due care".

Finance and Property Management Policy

Integrated Schools Version

  • We added two additional bullet points to this topic: one point relates to insuring board-owned property, and the other relates to using the Ministry of Education's Risk Management Scheme for contents and liability insurance.

Formal Complaints

  • We removed the statement "If the interim response does not resolve matters, or the matter is deemed sufficiently serious, an investigation may take place".

Investigate a Formal Complaint or Serious Allegation

  • Added the statement: "If the complainant is not satisfied, the board chair should advise the complainant of further avenues, e.g., Human Rights Commission, Ombudsman, Ministry of Education, ERO, Privacy Commissioner.

Care and Management of Students

  • Added that students in time-out must be checked regularly.

Smokefree Schools

  • Added the optional wording "This policy applies to all tobacco products, including e-cigarettes". This is our default wording.
  • This wording is optional because e-cigarettes are not prohibited under the Smokefree legislation although organisations can ban them as part of their smokefree policy. It is likely that they will be banned as part of the Government's Smokefree 2025 goal, possibly as early as 2018.

Catholic schools' content updates

Special Character

  • This topic now includes the Community topic, and we've added a statement about social justice.

Pastoral Care

  • This topic has had some editorial changes.

Special Character (basic)

  • If schools don't want the level of detail provided in the new Special Character topic, they can have this simpler version.

Attendance Dues and Other Income

  • We've brought together Catholic schools' income received from parents information in one topic.

Integrated schools' content update

  • We've brought together integrated schools' income received from parents information in one topic.
